Karim Benzema has set off the alarms in the French team after retiring today during the friendly that the ‘bleus’ are playing against Bulgaria at the Stade de France.
After five years of absence defending the shirt of his country, the Real Madrid forward also started in the second preparatory friendly for the European Championship, but was forced to withdraw from the pitch in the 38th minute.
Benzema injured his right thigh, just above the knee, when he headed a ball that went over the Bulgarian goal. It was during the jump that he had the misfortune to hit defender Valentin Antov and immediately complained of pain.
After a bandage was applied to the affected area, Benzema returned to the pitch but seconds later requested the change and Didier Deschamps replaced him with Olivier Giroud.
At half time, Deschamps himself removed some of the drama from the situation by confirming that it was a blow above the knee and that he did not want to take risks. Benzema does not have affected ligaments nor is it a muscle injury.
