With the new Sustainable Mobility Ordinance of the Madrid City Council, some traffic regulations will be changed.
It is quite logical that drivers do not know how to list exactly which are the traffic regulations that exist in Madrid and sometimes they find themselves improvising on the fly based on traffic signals, let alone those who arrive from outside. But the changes affect everyone and electric scooter and bicycle drivers live them too.
After Madrid Central comes the new Madrid Sustainable Mobility Ordinance, or Madrid 360, as you want to call the measures that are activated and deactivated in contrast to those that were previously. Beyond polemics and political debates, all are advertised as effective for fight city pollution and bring changes that should be known.
As reported in 20 minutes, the draft that goes ahead has 109 changes and at the moment it already shows some that directly affect electric scooters, in the absence of final approval.
One of the aspects that many judge as essential is that of restrict parking areas to specific places and that the scooters stop being anywhere on the sidewalks. Therefore, they will be created marked spaces on the road where these vehicles can be parked, whether individuals or companies.
With the helmet there are also changes, as expected as it is a topic that has been debated a lot lately. A novelty is that children under 18 must wear a helmet when driving one of these vehicles. But they will not be the only ones, those who are working with scooters, such as riders, will also have to carry them.
Also they will be prevented from circulating through tunnels that do not have a specific bike lane; that is, almost all of them. The reason is in how dangerous it is to lack a lighting system powerful enough to see and be seen.
The circulation with scooters and bicycles will be highly regulated with these novelties, added to those that already existed, such as the prohibition of moving on the sidewalk. We will see if all the changes are finally approved, as it is almost certain to happen.
