The answer to the possible drawbacks in terms of the autonomy of a large part of electric vehicles could be, neither more nor less, than in a trailer. This has been formulated by a start-up of French origin, EP Tender, who has proposed us an intelligent trailer while manufacturers find a way to offer more autonomy without having to install more and more batteries.
Provides an extra autonomy of 400km
Although the idea is not new (in the past some first prototypes such as generators appeared to generate electricity and reduce the consumption of batteries), now it would have taken a step forward in this regard. Thus, a concept that could be formulated very well for this type of problems in electric vehicles would be taken. The EP Tender thing is a platform that contains a 51 kWh battery that provides an extra range of 400 kilometers at high speed.
In principle, and as manufacturers such as Renault have proven, the project was to do so in favor of the electric vans, especially in what has to do with those that are electric intervention vehicles, deployed on motorways seven days a week, and effectively increase their autonomy. However, it has been the same Renault and the French of the PSA Group, Citroën, who have proposed it for the rest of the new generation cars.
For its part, EP Tender would offer the public its electrified trailer, for the moment, for rent. In addition, the French want to be present on the main holiday routes in Europe, which would ensure a very large market especially in the summer months. The trailer as such will have the capacity to couple to the car in a matter of autonomous way. And not only that, but they are already working to increase their capacity, to at least 60 kWh.
Electric vehicles will be recharged continuously
As such, this sample for electric vehicle batteries and range is more than just towing or hauling an extra charge. The company also intends to turn this prototype into a autonomous robot that is hooked and uncoupled only from the car itself. In this sense, the hook that holds the trailer to the car also acts as a plug, so the battery powers the engine directly.
A few years ago, it emerged that, to mediate the long recharging times of batteries, you could simply change the discharged battery that has been used by a charged one at a service station. In the same way, EP Tender has taken it to another point, since the car battery is not changed, but is hooked to that loaded trailer.
Once it is emptied, it is returned and another is hooked if necessary. The latest tests provided by the electric Renault ZOE dictate that it made a journey in similar times those who would have been slow to do it with a Renault Master diesel.
Renting these trailers would cost 34 euros a day
EP Tender expects to charge around $ 37 (34 euros to change) for the rental of each trailer, which is worth $ 11,000 (10,187). The company aspires to have benefits in 2024, when they estimate to have 60,000 customers who will use 4,150 trailers. For now, the only setback in sight is compatibility.
And it is that, the companies would have to make vehicles capable of assuming these powers and that also can load safely on the move. Hence EP Tender is in talks with Groupe Renault and Groupe PSA to test these systems. Similarly, it says it could adapt existing models for 650 euros.
