The DGT is clear that the use of mobile phones on the road must be reduced as much as possible and toughens penalties for its use or simply for carrying it. These are the possible fines you face.
The mobile phone can be a great source of distraction while driving. Responding to a message, changing music or consulting the GPS, tasks as simple as these are a risk for road safety and the DGT wants to reduce their use to the maximum.
Traffic has tightened the penalties that can be applied to drivers relating to these devices. The penalty may come at 200 euros and 6 card points and it will no longer be necessary to be using the terminal to justify that fine.
Until now, it was specified that a driver could be fined for “using” the telephone in the car. However, from now on also may be penalized for “carrying it in hand”. Even if it is blocked and it is not being used.
The DGT refers to the fact that carrying the mobile phone in your hand means releasing one of the steering wheel when dedicating both to this task except to change gears. Even if your eyes are fixed on the road and you are very attentive to traffic, driving with one hand to hold your mobile can be expensive with this new regulation.
“The mobile must go on the dashboard, in an approved support and without manipulation while driving“Traffic explains. To make use of this device, you must wait until you are in a safe area, which they do not consider to be either stopped in a traffic jam or waiting until the traffic light is no longer red.
These are the possible sanctions that can be imposed on us for using or holding the phone:
- Use the mobile in your hand: 6 points and 200 euros.
- Carry the mobile in your hand, but without using it: 6 points and 200 euros.
- Use the mobile with hands-free, but with distraction: 3 points and 200 euros.
Faced with these options, the need grows to resort to voice control mechanisms that allow us to keep our attention on the road and with both hands at the wheel. An example is Google Auto and other operating systems for the car that can manage calls, messages and music among other tasks with a virtual assistant that attends to our orders by voice commands.
