The farmers have released a statement in which they describe how they are affected by Mercadona’s policies and its imposition of prices.
Mercadona has many clients who share on social networks each new product that is put on sale and all the news that comes from the supermarket chain has great repercussion. However, it is not always positive news and what some offers or low prices hide can be more than controversial.
In recent years we have been reading numerous complaints from farmers and ranchers. Profit margins are getting smaller and smaller and these sectors see how foreign competition and supermarket prices play against them, something that can be seen in the manifesto AGAPROL OPL, organization of dairy producers.
The post title already sets the tone for the message and who is being campaigned against: OPEN LETTER TO MERCADONA: Enough of the lies. The organization that represents more than 600 farmers she is tired of Mercadona’s policies.
In the statement they publish that Mercadona is obtaining 17% more profits than the previous year, but that they are “outraged with the way your company proceeds“as for the Hacendado milk they supply. This happens because they pay them amounts lower than the costs production, a “mandatory legal requirement, in addition to being the lowest in the market“.
Mercadona sells more than 30% of milk in Spain and shows immovable in the rates they pay: they “mark the price“and the ranchers meet”with no choice but to say “amen” and, to make a mockery, sign a clause in the contract“.
These policies are what make Hacendado brand milk so cheap, but in the words of the farmers “This is neither efficiency nor business success, what you are doing is causing the massive closure of farms“A devastating message that can make consumers think about the consequences of these practices for such an important sector in Spain and the real cost of saving a few cents.
