Windows 10 May 2021 Update (21H1) is installed on top of the two previous operating system updates: May 2020 Update (2004) and October 2020 Update (20H2). Thus, there is no change in the base of the system, which limits the introduction of possible new errors. This is an atypical situation, but it has an explanation: that Microsoft is waiting at 21H2 for its big update of the year, where we will have ten new functions and an interface change with the arrival of Sun Valley.
In the meantime, we’ll have to settle for May 2021 Update, with the fewest changes in a Windows 10 update to date. The changes can be counted on the fingers of one hand, and are as follows.
What’s new in Windows 10 May 2021 Update
The first great novelty is found with Windows Hello, where we can now access the computer using a external camera instead of just the internal to enter without password. The operating system will detect the presence of the external camera even if there is an internal one connected, being able to set the external one as the default camera.
The second big news comes to Windows Defender Application Guard Performance, a feature that will allow administrators to configure applications to run in an isolated and virtualized environment.
The third great novelty also affects remote work, improving the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) and the Group Policy Service (GPSVC).
As we can see, it is surprising that Microsoft has decided to release an update with so few new features. There were some more features that were coming in this update, such as the use of DNS over HTTPS in all the applications of the operating system, but until that they have decided to delay until the second half of the year.
How to download Windows 10 May 2021 Update
The process to download the update is similar to the previous ones. We have mainly three ways to do it:
- Going to Settings> Update and Security. There, we click on Check for updates, and if our computer does not have compatibility problems, it should already appear.
- Use the Update wizard, which allows forcing the update
- Use the Media Creation Tool to force the update or create an ISO and install from scratch or preserving data.
Windows 10 May 2021 Update is going to be released very slow
The best option of all is to do it through Windows update (the first option), since this way we will make sure that we will not have compatibility problems, or at least if we have any it will be because Microsoft has not registered it yet.
Microsoft only takes firm and sure steps when it decides to release a major update to limit the compatibility issues that they can get into users’ computers. For this reason, it introduces blocks when it detects that the user has a driver or a hardware component that has presented failures or incompatibilities with the update, and waits to solve this failure or installs the necessary driver before launching the update. Currently the update is not forced and it is the users who can choose whether to update or not manually going to Windows Update.
